She never attended seminary,
yet taught advanced classes on ‘God’s loving-kindness’ for years.
When her parents began to fade like their wedding photos. she simply couldn’t bring herself to have them “placed in a home”
or any other form of ‘abandonment.’ Not on her watch.
She resigned the corporate world while still quite young—in fact, far too early to receive government assistance.
It was an enormous personal risk. There would be no pension in her future, no stocks, 401K or savings; and . . . she never worried about it.
Life was good for a season or two—reminiscent of the old home days.
But we all know life is fickle. Cruel. Too many twists and turns in our stories.
And she remains as human as anyone else. She tended to their slow demise the best she knew how, so hard for a loving daughter to watch. But doable for a hero.
As retirement pensions go, Mom and Pop’s was excellent, and it supported them. It was from a day when companies still offered ‘retirement’,and the elderly could enjoy their later years comfortably and without fear.
She managed her sweethearts’ affairs, cleaned and dressed them, fed, protected, spoke sweetly to and about, and made sure they had a daily laugh or two. And thus the trio remained best buddies until Dad and Mom passed on.
By then, her years and emotions were mostly consumed. Little social life; Nothing had turned out the way she’d imagined. And now, no income; no medical, dental. She was older, too. What now?
Alone, she could barely survive with “Social Security;” A cruel mockery of a term. As far as anyone could see, she was penniless.
But to this day she is in no way poor! As always, she trusts God to care for her out of His great wealth. He has not failed her. Her title is: ’Regretless,’ She is glad for the privilege to have sacrificed herself for those beautiful souls who provided everything all her life.
She still instructs us all, “The Lord can, does, and will provide all I need.” And, forever, the greatest lesson ever taught remains her life script: “Love cares more for others than for self.”
