BIRTHDAYS CAN BE SUCH FUN celebrations. We made it one more year! My wife and I have a running joke throughout our time together, which is, “We can endure ANYTHING for one year . . . right?”
It isn’t a thing of personal pride, but a call, once again, to humility. We laugh. But we understand the “if” that neither of us speaks out loud.
In our culture, all too often the older we get the less worth we are assigned. When you get there, you will notice it. That’s our current culture and we aren’t alone in the world with these attitudes. Youth! That is the thing to possess.
But we are all young once. Those of us who have lived beyond it grin and shake our heads. We’ve been given a great opportunity—Wisdom—gained through regrets (if nothing else).
We need only to look into the writings about a curious episode in the life of a man we know as Job. He learned a few things about his Creator, as we say, up close and personal.
If we learn nothing else from the book that bears his name, it is worth mentioning again. The meaning of “sovereign.”
Job 12:13-25 tells us succinctly everything we need to know about The One Who Causes Things To Exist. Verse 13 alone packs a punch: “True wisdom and real power belong to God; from him, we learn how to live, and also what to live for.”
I dare not elaborate on that statement. Perhaps Wisdom forbids. But that text instructs everyone the same as me.
If there is anything to brag about on our birthdays or any other day, it is this: God decided we would still be here again today. Live for the good reasons we are here. Verses 14 - 25 provide examples of what can happen if we fail to understand verse 13 and act on it accordingly.
Look at this banana tree. It came from Jamaica (where my wife and I were married). It teaches basic lessons about our maker every year, like how to live. I expect it will be at its yearly peak on our wedding anniversary next month.
If anyone wants to know what to live for, why not ask? Or at least observe the amazing creation all around us. Want power? Plug into the only true source.
Grow tall and green and be a blessing. More than that, be one reason others thank God we exist today.
