Steal Away

LAST EVENING I RECEIVED a text notification from an unidentified neighbor whose Ring doorbell was stolen from their front door post. The video is impressively clear. In it, a woman (apparently), nice nails, all polished, used her cell phone screen as an accomplice to “blind” the Ring unit while she removed it. Of course, everyone online could clearly see all the information on the phone screen. And . . . WHY would anyone want to steal a registered doorbell camera?

News reports admonishing us to be smarter about merchandise left unattended drone on in the news every holiday season. The megalopolis where I live has surged in reports of car thefts at gunpoint—day and night—fatal shootings during rush hour on the interstate, and innocent folks carjacked while refueling—or houses broken into while people were home. We assume men, yet most recently girls/women armed with tire tools, et al. have joined the fray!

They need to get a life. They won’t find it by stealing, violence, and destroying. Ironically, these bad actors may teach us important lessons about the best life we all could have. Something The Master obviously yearned for us to know.

This morning I happened upon an unusual advent meditation; Jesus was saying he is “the sheep gate,” (He is The Way to a safe place). Interesting that the closer time comes for us to celebrate the birth of the Prince of Peace the more intense activity swells to disrupt our peace.

The Way to peace, ironically, lies right in the middle of our chaos and disruption. As far as I can see, it's God's way! The Bible contains many stories about times Jesus brought total calm, order, and healing in the middle of daemonic convulsions, storms on a sea, hunger and thirst, deadly disease, birth defects, and even death. Now as then it seems like an enemy really doesn’t want us to notice those warm and hopeful moments.

It's obvious, isn't it? Our enemy wants us upset and miserable. But God's 'More Excellent Way' and Peace that passes human understanding has been around for millennia. In that way of life and living alone may we find pure joy and contentment. It only takes a couple of sentences from The Master to set us straight: “A thief is only there to steal and kill and destroy. I came so you can have real and eternal life, more and better life than you ever dreamed of.” ~ Jn. 10:7-10
