Perfect!

HE WAS A POPULAR GUY to say the least, and I wanted to be him.

Not LIKE him. HIM.

Good looking, perfect haircut. AZURE eyes.

He always sent his clothes to the dry cleaner.

All of them.

Shirts were starched to perfection. Pants on a hanger.

Never a wrinkle or visible flaw.

He did not own a washing machine. Or iron.

I’m sure he never bought one thing from Wal Mart.

And women!?

Always hitting on him.

Since I was a close friend, the girls always asked me what HE liked.

Sigh.

We parted friendship at one point over some of his attitudes

And the way he treated a friend of mine.

I chose a different path. Still

In the corporate world, he got the big promotions. Money.

He was smart! Very smart, and educated.

Always had the right words to say

And a ‘cute little giggle’ to go with the big smiles;

I suppose his women friends had encouraged that through the years.

A decade or two later I read that he was on his third, forth, or fifth CEO position.

The picture of perfection and success.

So when I read his post, “I miss my ex like a bad toothache.”

I wondered what could have happened.

And

When mutual friends told stories of spouse and child abuse

I hoped we weren’t discussing the same person.

Needing to be ‘in charge’ of everything and everyone, pointing out who's to blame,

And insisting on being obeyed never got anyone where they REALLY wanted to go.

I lift up my old friend to the Lord. For I remember God’s warning to me—

From years ago that someone had the patience to impress upon me.

And I listened . . . again.

Though I doubt it will ever be taught in any business school,

It speaks of what REAL success is, I believe:

“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up.” (Js 4:10)
