THROUGHOUT MY CAREER YEARS, I quickly learned to follow what was expected of me in the rule books which are often referred to as Employee Handbooks. To fail meant certain termination. Of course, handbooks weren’t the only patterns of required acceptable behavior.
In every company there is a hierarchy of power known as the corporate leaders. Companies love to construct and constantly modify a pyramid with the names of management from the top to the least. They want you to know who the boss is.
Those further down in the power structure are always outdoing themselves to be seen as better than their peers by making their own rules and requiring their immediate reports to focus on those tasks, known as departmental goals. Work can become quite complex, as you may have experienced, and survival requires careful personal strategies.
I began to realize that most of that “work” being done related not to moving the company forward, but more specifically moving it forward the way our immediate bosses expected it to be done. More incentive money for them for reaching their objectives.
We the underlings were left to survive by subtly making our (individual) performance appear better than the rest of those less-talented coworkers.
Even with improved EQ hiring practices, people games are all so exhausting. And the more things change the more they stay the same.
There is a certain humor to it all.
The hard truth is, this is the way humans have behaved since the first two. It’s taught and modeled in institutional learning facilities, including many homes. If all else fails, survive. That leads us to just keep things steady anyway we can.(Also known as, "Don't rock the boat.")
We engage the same solutions over and over, yet hope for different outcomes.
What we really need is a change of change, or a new pattern for success.
Without a mentor to help us create another way of thinking, we become imprisoned by going through mind-numbing daily routines. We are blinded by habit, frustrated and unable to become our creative best.
For years I resisted doing the same things over and over—it was hard for me to do only what I was told to do. My DNA is different. I had a well-developed sense of continuous improvement. I believed if I could just step up and show the bosses what I could do—that I was a valuable asset to their work unit— they would surely promote me! And, sadly, my early company goings were miserable struggles. The more talent I showed the more busywork I received.
It didn't occur to me that there might be a better way to handle promotion until I was much closer to the end of corporate life. I discovered a “new” tactic. Unsure of how to implement it, I put my own ideas aside at last and simply followed instructions by the Book.
I know what you're thinking.
How can I get my hands on that Book?
Maybe I could find it online for $9.95, or, better still, borrow one for free from a friend.
Look no further. If you want to know my innovation, it will cost you only a minuscule fraction of what it cost me. For a mere $9.99 per month, I can supply YOU with a weekly dose of my Guaranteed Success Plan (G.S.P). I refer to it as, "GaSP. " And gasp will no doubt describe YOUR reaction once you see what it will do for you!
Or . . . you can read the first few verses of Romans 12 in the Bible, and apply it. It's advice proven to be successful over millennia. It will bring you the results you never knew you wanted and needed. If implemented, you will succeed. You will never need another org chart to look up who the boss is. I guarantee it!
The Plan in a Nutshell:
“Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering.
“Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking.
“Instead, fix your attention, not so much on your career, but on God.
“You’ll be changed from the inside out.
"Pay attention to what he wants from you, and quickly do it.
“Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity,
GOD BRINGS THE BEST OUT OF YOU.” (MSG)
Winners never stop. See you at the top!
