It's Good

I've always enjoyed my alone time. With age, I became more independent and seized every opportunity I could to take just-me trips to the woods, the top of mountains, stand near (and sometimes in) waterfalls, build a fire by some rocky creek, and set up my tent for the night.

While in the quiet, I sought inspiration to write songs and short stories. The right words. The songs I wrote were probably more special to me than for commercial purposes, but my writing has taken a good direction. It's the reason these words are before you today. I persisted. One night in the mountains of North Carolina I decided to just write down the first thing that popped into my mind and go from there. And, after all that thinking and studying and wondering, my fingers scribbled, "Thank you."

Some might think I'd been struck by writers' block. But Thank you was where my head and heart were at the moment. I had seen those words in a song, and there was no time like the moment to sing them.

Living words that lead to a good life are strewn quietly throughout God's book. They can comfort, instruct, and install confidence in us no matter what happens in or around us. But it's so easy to overlook them sometimes because we've been conditioned to seek the sensational. If it isn't described as "amazing, awesome, or you've-never-seen-anything-like-this," we tend to ignore. After all, could just "good" be worth our time? Without embellishment, "good" seems boring.

As our moms would surely testify, saying, "Thank you" is spoken too seldom. So, I've decided I will practice it first thing in the mornings and the last thing before sleeping. I will pause and ponder a simple, single thought. (that always leads to other thoughts!) A thought about God multiplies—like loaves and fishes after a blessing or a loaded fishing net after obedience.

God has no need to embellish. After creating the world and everything in it, He didn't need to say, "It's amazing" or "It's fantastic" or even, "This is the most fabulous thing you could ever imagine." He simply said, "It's good!" That is enough for God. And so it is for me.

Notice the "Thank you" at the beginning of the day and at the end. I take it as a signature from God, the beginning and the end (Alpha and Omega). He invites us to be like Him and imitate His goodnessby doing good at the beginning and end of each day.

Sometimes I read His thoughts. Other times I hear them from a friend. Or on the radio. Even in passing conversations. When it finally dawns on me that I am being reminded, I know it is time to consider that maybe somebody is thinking of me. Time to say, "Thank you."

This passage lay before me (refer to photo) in a Bible study last night. And I was reminded of it again first thing this morning.

"Thank you" to God is good. Who knows what it may create? Singing little songs to him through the day is good as well.

Since it is GOOD, I should follow the guidance for that reason alone—and entertain every kindness that comes to mind while I’m saying, “Thank you for your kindness and faithfulness.” I can know that I've done something good for the day. I suspect it will help me think better and take my day to where I want to be. Certainly, to the place HE wants me to be.

(from Psalm 92~TLB)
