My grandson stopped by today; it's fun to watch a new human full of curiosity and energy.

In one rare quiet moment, he was sitting still on my knee taking in what everyone was doing. A storm had moved through the area and the room was darkened so I reached up and pulled the chain to turn on a nearby floor lamp.

Of course, he always watches EVERYTHING I do. So when the light came on his eyes became wide as he looked first at me, then back at the light several times.

We chatted about it, but he mostly wanted me to yank the chain again and stretched out his hand toward it while watching me with those big eyes.

So I turned the light off and then back on again and again. Each time he smiled and giggled. Of course, that initiated a new game that included laughter and delightful adoration toward me each time I repeated it. Yes, he knows how to work me.

To everyone else, it was only a light switch. But he had never seen that before. To him it was a-m-a-z-i-n-g. I was amazing.

When we adults started out our life journey we were filled with wonder. Nothing could stop our quest to find out how everything works. Somewhere along the way, we began to lose that curiosity. Things became common and even boring after a while.

Over the years our awe for life began to slow. Technology doesn’t awe us anymore. The universe and even the planet we live on have lost some of its allure. We fail to even muster fascination with the people who cross our paths in life. Those unique beings God placed there. And, oh, the variety He made. We stop being so curious.

Even as I talk about it and picture what I’m saying at this moment, I admit it is difficult to regenerate the fascination I once had. I'm no longer amazed at seasons, day and night, the abundance of and variety in earth’s beautiful vegetation and animal life. And those breathtaking skies, never the same twice . . . but I go on too much.

Through the eyes of a child, though, I was impressed—again. And as I spoke with God this morning He gently offered me these thoughts. Maybe I should be curious about the whole scene as I could be missing something. And focus on the why of One who prompted me to remember and share.

Perhaps these thoughts will be helpful to you as well. And like my grandson to me, maybe I should once again spend a little more time being curious and amazed at the way God still turns on the light for me.
