And Live

We will make many purchases throughout life.

Houses, cars, babies, groceries, maybe a winning lottery ticket.

We know, today could be the day!

But I suspect that the following may not be viewed as purchases,

They do involve a cost.

What we get in return will be priceless.

More valuable than winning by chance.

Call Mom.

Talk to Dad.

We should visit the people who raised us.

Parents know all our early history, in fact they know everything about us.

They alone can give advice specially designed for us.

They learned these things at great personal cost.

They know people you may need to know some day.

They know MANY things you will most certainly need to know some day.

Spend all the time you can with them.

Once they are gone, there is no replacement.

Listen to them.

Ask every question that comes to mind..

They can protect us from bad things, even years after they've passed away.

And instruct us how to handle life's adversities even when we're old.

We've heard them say things like, “Everything is going to be OK”

Even when it looks like there is no way it can.

And then it happens.

How did they know?

We think they're probably only saying that to be encouraging.

But what if they were trying to save our lives?

There is another good reason we should consult them.

Halfway through the 10 Commandments, God makes a promise:

“Honor your father and mother…to have a long life.”

It's God's first command-with-a- promise combo.

What if it really will preserve our lives?

We should do ourselves a favor,

It's the best investment we could ever make.

What I’m about to write is as true as anything gets:

"Listen with respect to the father who raised you,

And when your mother grows old, don’t neglect her.

From them:

Buy truth—don’t sell it for love or money;

Buy wisdom,

Buy education,

Buy insight.

Parents rejoice when their children turn out well;

Wise children become proud parents.

So make your father happy!

Make your mother proud."

And live!

(Based on Proverbs 23:24 MSG)
